Personalise emails and notifications with variables

Add a customer’s first name, their order number or their reward code to any email or notification — each box offers only the variables that work there.

What a variable is

A variable is a word in curly brackets, such as {{first_name}}. When the email sends, it becomes the customer’s own detail: “Hi {{first_name}}” becomes “Hi Asha”.

In the designer, variables show as coloured chips. Click { } beside any box to add one.

Each box offers only what fits

Words boxes (headlines, text, subjects) offer words, numbers, prices and codes. Link boxes offer links. Picture boxes offer pictures.

Campaigns offer only what every subscriber has: first name and your store’s name and address. Automatic messages add what that message is about, such as the order number in a review request or the code in a reward email.

If a variable is in the wrong place — a link in a headline, or a reward code in a campaign — the email won’t save, and the Check list says how to fix it.

When a detail is missing

Some customers have no first name in Shopify. Click a chip and type what to show instead, such as “there”: “Hi {{first_name|there}}” becomes “Hi there”.

The unsubscribe link and your postal address are added by the footer of every email, so you never add them yourself.

See every variable

Click How variables work in the designer. It lists the variables this email can use first, then every other one, with an example of each.
